utter presents rgbpm, trevor jackson s four piece audio-visual work originally commissioned for a live performance at the optronica festival in 2007, on london s imax, the biggest screen in the uk. optronica, programmed by addictive tv/cinefeel in collaboration with the british film institute, held its second festival over five consecutive days at the imax, ica and bfi southbank in march 2007. a showcase of the most exciting talent working in visual music, optronica s 2007 event was a platform for live performances, talks, screenings and workshops from the likes of fennesz, peter greenaway and ryoichi kurokawa. jackson s piece took over six months to develop and yet was performed only once. on march 14th the premier of rgbpm opened the festival in spectacular fashion, jackson performing the music live with its accompanying hd visuals generated in real time using custom-built software created especially by weirdcore. a powerful multi-sensory experience, the event remains one of the defining moments of jackson s lengthy career. the visuals consist of abstract shapes synchronised perfectly to jackson’s soundtrack. choreographed to represent musical elements within each track, they explore the relationship between melody, colour, rhythm and form. the diverse soundtrack combines magical motorik experiments, demented acidic jams, melodic subterranean techno and dark discordant electronic soundscapes. it s a timeless selection of music that holds its own to this day. a decade on from rgbpm s lone airing, utter is proud to release all four parts together for the first time as a special 12- package, mastered and cut by helmut erler at d&m and housed in a sleeve designed by jackson himself.

drummer and music producer desmond mahoney is another of the unsung heroes of british reggae. born in jamaica, he moved to the uk in 1967 and began his professional career playing drums in a band called young ones from zion. he was a founding member of black slate when the group formed in 1974, played with them through their glory years and after running a sound system in north london for many years, returned to the fold when the group reformed a few years ago. his first foray in music production probably came during a brief period in toronto in 1978, working with a band called the ishan lions, but he was back in the uk in time for black slate’s breakthrough material, which brought them onto ensign in the uk, barclay in france and alligator in the usa. at the same time, he continued to arrange and produce for a number of british reggae artists operating in both the roots and lover’s rock modes, female duo nya & natty’s ‘one love stylee’ seemed to bridge the two styles quite successfully on this greatly sought-after 12-inch, first issued in 1981 on the s&g label, then based at a record shop in bow.

in 1988, on the eve of a two decade civil war, somalia s authoritarian ruler siad barre launched punishing air strikes on the north of the country, known today as somaliland, in response to agitations for independence. the bombing leveled the entire city. barre targeted radio hargeisa to prevent any kind of central communication system that could organize a resistance. with the attack imminent, a few brave radio operators and dedicated vanguards of somali culture knew the archives, containing over half a century of somali music had to be preserved. thousands upon thousands of cassette tapes and master reels were quickly removed from the soon-to-be targeted buildings. they were dispersed to neighboring countries like djibouti and ethiopia, and buried deep under the ground to withstand even the most powerful airstrikes.

released in 2008, this outstanding album was never pressed on vinyl. it contains some of juana molina s most rhythmic pieces (including the epic title track), and saw her dig deeper into electronic textures. un día was juana s final album for the domino label . pitchfork decided that it was as warm and welcoming as it is weird, all music guide calls it as experimental as björk s but much more inviting. for rolling stone us, this album is her most adventurous, combining avant-garde vocals with the atmospherics of portishead and my bloody valentine. and french music bible les inrockuptibles wrote: a real album of trance music which, like with john coltrane or nusrat fateh ali khan, doesn t aim for a loss of consciousness but rather for reaching a higher level of knowledge

portable is alan abrahams, a south african born artist, producer, and celebrated live act who has released his minimal wares on cult labels like perlon and live at robert johnson, as well as his own süd electronic label. abrahams’ first lp for !k7 is his most personal yet, taking the artist’s given name for its title. the album places portable’s distinctive vocals front and center, showcasing some very real song writing skills next to abrahams’ own piano playing, in addition to a few choice collaborators.

its just over a year since we started our new label, real balearic. for our second artist album we are really pleased (and honoured) to welcome one of the few djs who can claim to be one of the founders of the eclectic balearic sound. take a trip back to the 70s and 80s in northern italy and you will fine daniele baldelli mixing up electronic, african and slo-mo disco records to co-create the electronica meccanica sub genre. records often would be played at the wrong or variable speed to be made to fit into a wide aural tapestry of his unexpected-but-seamlessly-flowing dj sets. this of course is an aesthetic close to us here at real balearic. a sound we are ever so pleased to have as part of the mixing pot for our new balearic label. for the album he pairs up with fellow italian dj rocca to serve up an eclectic â€,“, electronic â€,“, balearic feast.

let s face it, summer in new york city is sweltering. even with all the windows open and fans on high, it is hard to find refuge in alliance upholstery s chinatown offices. today s sweat though, is due to the -dancer on the shore- ep, the latest release by the brooklyn based band, lemonade (cascine/true panther sounds). -dancer- is a subdued summertime collage of steel drums, buoyant electronic pads and windswept vocals. joined by dee dee from dum dum girls, it is a celebration of the space where humans and nature exist in harmony. originally released digitally as a single on cascine in 2015, the band created a dj friendly extended mix for this release. if you have been to the -air a dancer- party over the last few seasons, you have likely already heard it (sometimes twice in one night!).

locked club is the new russian electronic punk music. a wild combination of the legacy of classic house music, new-wave acid and techno sounds and the immersion of post-soviet dance experimentation. born out of scruffy techno beginnings at drum-heavy basement parties, this is a serious, acid inflicted view of modern electronic music from the other side - away from the surrealism of the big room. locked club and rlgn recorded this project together in a basement for the basement.

weaving sophisticated orchestral scores with spacious electronic production, oofjs baroque modern pop perches on the edge of contemporary music, overlooking both the familiar past and the anything-goes future. after bonding over their mutual love for french synthesizer music, all things russian, and serge gainsbourg, jenno bjørnkjær and katherine mills rymer formed oofj, whose distinctive chilled-out sounds find their way deep into your ear like an electronic ind gyrating with eerie symphonies plus the delicate sound of expensive-lingerie vocals, that could make you cry in a good-looking way.

octo champ releases his second ep of 2017, following up on not quite there yet, which received major exposure from thump and dj mag. this upfront four-track release is a selection of dance floor ready disco and house and sits boldly apart from a lot of other music within these genres. dj support so far from dan shake and titeknots amongst others. taking inspiration from the more exotic corners of the musical spectrum the ep leads with the upbeat make heaven and its conga rhythms, vocal hooks and electronic patterns. cmi is slower and moves further into the groove whilst lacuna is the ep s funkiest cut, featuring a killer bass hook, percussion, guitar chops, claps and more vocals to carry it along. closing with a second four to the four track diametric leads with an elastic, acoustic bassline, synth pads and you ve guessed it: more vocal hooks. octo champ is one-half of dj/promoter duo rigid disco, running parties and radio shows across both london and glasgow and booking rising stars such as tom blip, fyi chris, hector plimmer and the rye wax crew. octo champ has remixed soundway s flamingods and chpln as well as contributing to the cdr x dimensions sounds 2016 project. most recently, his music was picked up by let s go swimming who released the not quite there yet ep.

el origen is a collaborative project between chile s rodrigo gallano (matanza) and nicola cruz (zzk) exploring the folkloric musical traditions of south america. the a side is comprised of original compositions written, played and sung by rodrigo while nicola cruz remixes all the tracks on the b side, giving the sons his signature deep electronic vibe. the ep will be out on a special limited edition 12- with art composed by renown street artist ju mu monster.

ocean parkway, the new sublabel from brooklyn s names you can trust, launches with a deep dive! drawing inspiration from sounds as varied as tortoise and trentmøller, lavender lagoon eschews traditional genre cliches, blending sampled drums and synth patches to paint an electronic collage inspired by the lush, organic flow of nature. the a-side presents an optimistic tryptic: a boy hunting for butterflies, dogs swimming in suburban pools, and the smell of spring rain. but flip it over to side b and a darker realm is revealed â&#128,&#148, one in which the cold physics of outerspace reign supreme, and the heavy computerized rhythms take control.

the elegant superposition of the melody and the rhythm of this music offers the best prelude to the new label called sapiens, represented by an emblematic artist of the electronic music scene, and ambassador of the hexagone for more than 15 years. this track is representative of his news inspirations and influences, and reveals artistic intentions shifted toward an incredible musical and human wealth.
